The Work Related Learning Programme provides students with the opportunity to develop their communication skills, team working, independence, confidence and self esteem among many other positive outcomes.
We have endeavoured to develop links with local community business providers so that our students can experience real working environments where their theoretical knowledge of the workplace can be put into practice.
We have students placed at Ayudante, PM Training, children’s nurseries, schools, garages, farms, supermarkets and our own in-house catering. The students undertake accredited classroom based work where they learn about the places to look for work opportunities, applying for vacancies, attending interviews, health and safety in the workplace and learning specifics about their place of work.
This is all accredited through BTEC Work Skills units and an Award in Planning and Participating in Work Experience. We encourage students to be as independent as possible on their placement and many students will make their own journeys to and from their placement. We have had some great successes with these placements and students feel empowered to make decisions on their next steps after College.
Work Skills staff liaise very closely with The Shaw Trust to provide employment opportunities for our students who are seeking work, this could be paid employment or voluntary. We appreciate that “work” means different things to different people and so we take a very flexible approach. We work with many local employers to overcome misconceptions and who are keen to give our students the opportunity to experience the workplace and who are willing to offer employment.
